Prepare for a unique musical exploration within our community! The upcoming event, “Night of Global Strings,” is designed to expand our listening experiences and perspectives. The organizers have curated a program that investigates the question of what defines “American music.” This theme encourages reflection on the varied influences and sounds that form our nation’s musical character, often drawing from surprising origins and traditions.

This concert held on February 7 and 8, offers more than just contemplation; it provides direct experience through outstanding performances. The program begins with Charles Ives’ “Unanswered Question,” establishing a reflective atmosphere. Following this, we will move to Latin American sounds with Juan David Osorio’s “El Paraíso Según María” and Arturo Márquez’s “Danzón No. 2.” These selections highlight the significant influence of Latin American music on the American musical scene, providing a pleasing difference from expected classical styles.

The main focus of the evening is Antonin Dvořák’s Cello Concerto in B minor. This well-known composition is admired for its deep feeling and technical difficulty. Performing this significant piece is the highly skilled Cuban-American cellist, Tommy Mesa. His background is anticipated to bring a particularly informed and passionate rendition to Dvořák’s sweeping melodies and intense sections. This offers an opportunity to experience a familiar work from a new viewpoint, connecting us deeply to its emotional heart.

Tommy Mesa’s participation is a key feature, promising an outstanding performance of Dvořák’s Cello Concerto. As a Cuban-American musician, he offers a distinct cultural viewpoint that can enrich the performance with a special quality and insight. This concerto, frequently seen as a dialogue between the cello and the orchestra, examines deep emotions and a feeling of yearning, subjects with broad appeal. Hearing Mesa perform it will surely be a memorable occasion, demonstrating both the cello’s strength and the depth of his musical understanding.
