Greenville, SC Community

March is National Reading Month, and there’s still time to make the most of it right here in Greenville, SC. Whether you have a reluctant reader at home, you’re trying to rebuild your own reading habit, or you just love an excuse to crack open a new book, the rest of this month is yours.

Reading is one of those habits that pays you back, no matter your age or stage of life. And in a city that takes community seriously, Greenville has built some genuinely great resources to make it easier for everyone to participate.

Why March Gets a Whole Month Dedicated to Reading

National Reading Month has been observed every March for decades, largely inspired by the legacy of Dr. Seuss, whose birthday falls on March 2. The National Education Association uses this month to spotlight the importance of reading in child development and lifelong learning. But the message goes well beyond kids. Reading regularly has been shown to reduce stress, sharpen focus, and even slow cognitive decline as we age.

For families, it’s a reminder that reading together at home is one of the highest-impact habits you can build, and it doesn’t cost a thing.

Your Reading HQ: The Greenville County Library System

If you haven’t visited a Greenville County Library branch lately, you might be surprised by everything it offers. With 12 locations across the county, from the Hughes Main Branch downtown to spots in Mauldin, Taylors, Travelers Rest, and Simpsonville, there’s likely one close to you.

Through the end of this season, adult readers 18 and older can join the library’s reading challenge by picking up a log at any branch or registering through the ReadSquared app. Each day you read earns progress, and finishing the challenge comes with real prizes, including a voucher for a free pastry from Swamp Rabbit Café and Grocery.

For kids and families, the library offers a full calendar of programs throughout the year:

  • Storytime and Toddler Tales for the youngest readers
  • Little Learners Club, a kindergarten readiness program for kids about to start school
  • Teen workshops covering everything from science to creative writing
  • Virtual classes and activities for families who can’t make it to a branch in person

Check the library’s event calendar to find what’s happening near you before March wraps up.

Downtown’s Literary Heart: M. Judson Booksellers

If you’ve spent any time on Main Street, you’ve probably noticed M. Judson Booksellers inside the historic Old Courthouse building. This independent bookstore has become one of Greenville’s most beloved community anchors, with a carefully curated selection and a calendar full of author events, book clubs, and local conversations.

Here’s some of what’s still on tap this month:

  • In Conversation events featuring local and national authors
  • Literary Bingo nights in partnership with the Greenville County Library, complete with prizes
  • Biweekly Storytime on the Steps, perfect for families with young children
  • Open mic nights hosted by the South Carolina Governor’s School are open to all

M. Judson also runs a year-long reading challenge where participants find books that answer a monthly prompt, announced on their Instagram page. Complete all 12 months, and you’ll earn a commemorative t-shirt plus an invitation to their end-of-year celebration.

Simple Ways to Build a Reading Habit at Home

You don’t need a program or a prize to make reading stick. A few small shifts go a long way:

  • Read aloud together, even with older kids. It builds vocabulary and gives everyone something to talk about.
  • Let kids pick their own books. When kids choose what they read, they’re far more likely to finish it.
  • Set a family reading window after dinner or before bed, even just 15 to 20 minutes.
  • Mix it up. Audiobooks, graphic novels, and magazines all count.
  • Visit the library as an outing, not just an errand. Let kids browse freely.
  • Lead by example. When kids see the adults around them reading for fun, they get curious.

There’s Still Time to Get Involved This Month

National Reading Month is a great nudge, but the best reading habit is the one that outlasts March. I’d love to help your family put down roots in a community where great schools, great neighbors, and great resources are all part of everyday life.
